5 by 7 blocks of 9", a 3" border, finished at 51" x 69". The first block most quilters learn: nine squares, two fabrics, sharp corners.

Cutting chart
Cut strips across the width of fabric, then subcut. All measurements include 1/4" seam allowances.

Cut 15 strips 3 1/2" x WOF.
- Subcut 175 3 1/2" squares
Background1 3/8 yd
Cut 12 strips 3 1/2" x WOF.
- Subcut 140 3 1/2" squares
Border3/4 yd
Cut 6 strips 3 1/2" x WOF; join them end to end, then cut the four borders to length.
Binding5/8 yd
Cut 6 strips 2 1/2" x WOF; join them on the diagonal and press in half lengthwise.
Backing, binding, batting
Backing
3 3/8 yd of 42" fabric: 2 panels 59" long, seamed crosswise, for a 59" x 77" back (4" extra on every side for the longarm or your frame). Or 2 1/4 yd of 108" wide backing, no seams.
Binding
6 strips 2 1/2" x WOF, joined on the diagonal and folded in half: 240" around the quilt plus 12" for the corners and the join.
Batting
A piece at least 59" x 77".
